Removal And Installation: Removal

  1. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .

  2. Unlock and disconnect the oil temperature sensor harness connector (2).
  3. Disengage the oil temperature harness connector from the bracket (1).

  4. Unlock and disconnect the four Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) wire harness connectors (3).

  5. Remove the four indicated bolts from the VVAA in the sequence shown.
    NOTE:

    These bolts need to be removed prior to the installation of the Multiair® Spring Compressor tool. Once in place, the tool obstructs access to these bolts.

  6. Prepare the 10259A/B Multiair® Spring Compressor tool for installation on the VVAA:
    • Position the four compressor assemblies (1) at the 2.4L markings.
    • Position the two stops (2) at the 2.4L markings.
    • Loosen the compressor assemblies (1) to fit over the VVAA valve and spring assemblies (clockwise rotation).

    CAUTION:

    Attempting to remove or install the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) without special tools 10259A/B and 2025300090 will result in damage to the VVAA, valves or cylinder head.

  7. Install the (special tool #10259B, Compressor, MultiAir® Spring) (1) to the VVAA.
  8. Tighten the compressor assemblies (2) until the valve springs are fully compressed.

  9. Remove the two indicated bolts (1) and install the (special tool #2025300090, Alignment Pins, Multiair to Cylinder Head) hand tight until seated on the cylinder head.
  10. Remove the remaining four bolts (2) from the VVAA.
  11. Remove the VVAA, with the Multiair® Spring Compressor tool attached, from the cylinder head.

    CAUTION:

    Do not invert the variable valve actuation assembly when it is removed from the engine. Oil will drain from the assembly and excessive engine cranking will be required to refill the assembly and start the engine.

  12. Set the assembly (1) onto two blocks of wood (2) to store during repairs.
    NOTE:

    Be sure to store the assembly in the upright position AT ALL TIMES to prevent oil related issues within the assembly.

    NOTE:

    There are two locating dowel pins (2) that properly position the VVAA to the cylinder head. Be careful that both dowels remain installed in the cylinder head after removing the VVAA. If a dowel comes loose, locate the missing dowel and discard it. Install a new dowel. DO NOT REUSE A DOWEL THAT HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE CYLINDER HEAD.

  13. Remove and DISCARD  the VVAA gasket (1). Remove any residual gasket material and sealant from the VVAA, cylinder head and cylinder head cover. Refer to ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION  .

  14. If required, remove the rocker arms (1) from the VVAA.
  15. If required, remove the oil temperature sensor from the VVAA. Refer to SENSOR, OIL TEMPERATURE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
