Removal And Installation: Installation
- If removed, install the oil temperature sensor to the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA). Refer to
SENSOR, OIL TEMPERATURE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If removed, install the rocker arms (1) to the VVAA.
- If the dowel/locating pins were removed, install two NEW
VVAA locating pins (1).
- Install a NEW
VVAA gasket (1).CAUTION:
Attempting to remove or install the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) without special tools 10259A/B and 2025300090 will result in damage to the VVAA, valves or cylinder head.
- Install the three (special tool #2025300090, Alignment Pins, Multiair to Cylinder Head) (1) hand tight in the indicated locations. Two of the pins sit inside of the two VVAA locating dowels.
- Prepare the 10259A/B Multiair® Spring Compressor tool for installation on the VVAA:
- Position the four compressor assemblies (1) at the 2.4L markings.
- Position the two stops (2) at the 2.4L markings.
- Loosen the compressor assemblies (1) to fit over the VVAA valve and spring assemblies (clockwise rotation).
CAUTION:Do not invert the variable valve actuation assembly when it is removed from the engine. Oil will drain from the assembly and excessive engine cranking will be required to refill the assembly and start the engine.
- Install the (special tool #10259B, Compressor, MultiAir® Spring) (1) to the VVAA.
- Tighten the compressor assemblies (2) until the valve springs are fully compressed.
- Set the VVAA (2) into position onto the three alignment pins (1).NOTE:
It is very important that the plungers of the VVAA are centered over the intake valve stem tips. When properly aligned, the VVAA will set down onto the cylinder head evenly and will not have a tendency to wobble when set onto the head.
NOTE:The VVAA should sit relatively flush to cylinder head with no more then a 1 to 2 mm gap between the mating surfaces. An excessive gap indicates the VVAA is not seated properly.
- Visually inspect the alignment of the VVAA plungers.
- This is a visual indication of an IMPROPERLY aligned VVAA. The centerline of the plunger (1) and the centerline of the intake valve stem (2) are not aligned.
- This is a visual indication of a PROPERLY aligned VVAA. The centerline (1) of both the plunger and the intake valve stem are aligned.
- Install the four accessible VVAA retaining bolts (1) hand tight.
- Remove the Multiair® Spring Compressor (2) from the VVAA.
- Remove the 2025300090 Alignment Pins (1).
- Install the remaining six VVAA retaining bolts hand tight.
- Tighten the ten VVAA retaining bolts in three steps following the sequence shown:
- Step 1: All to 10 Nm (89 in. lbs.).
- Step 2: All to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).
- Step 3: All again to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).
NOTE:The VVAA and oil temperature sensor wire harness connectors are similar. Verify that the oil temperature sensor wire harness connector is not inadvertently connected to a VVAA solenoid.
- Connect and lock the four VVAA wire harness connectors (3).
- Connect and lock the oil temperature sensor wire harness connector (2).
- Engage the oil temperature electrical connector to the bracket (1).
- Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- The Cam/Crank Variation Relearn procedure must be performed using the scan tool anytime there has been a repair/replacement made to a power train system, for example: flywheel, valve train, camshaft and/or crankshaft sensors or components. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
