Removal And Installation: Removal

  1. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .

  2. Unlock and disconnect the four Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) wire harness connectors (1).
  3. Unlock and disconnect the oil temperature sensor wire harness connector (2).
  4. Remove the five rear bolts (3a) from the VVAA (3b).

    NOTE:

    The coils of the springs must not be compressed and packed together, there must remain a gap between them to avoid exceeding the maximum permissible force.

  5. Assemble the (special tool #2027207090, Tab, 90 Degree) and (special tool #2020001090, Adapter, Multi Air Spring Compressor) to the (special tool #10259B, Compressor, MultiAir® Spring).
  6. Position the tools (1) and tighten the screws to compress the springs on the VVAA.

    CAUTION:

    Do not invert the variable valve actuation assembly when it is removed from the engine. Oil will drain from the assembly and excessive engine cranking will be required to refill the assembly and start the engine.

  7. Remove the bolts (1a) and remove the VVAA (1b), with the tools attached, from the cylinder head.

  8. Remove the VVAA gasket (1).
  9. If required, remove the locating dowels (2).
