Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, read and record DTCs and Freeze Frame data on the repair.
    3. With the scan tool, erase the PCM DTCs.
    4. Attempt to start the engine, cranking the engine for at least seven (7) seconds.
    5. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any 5-Volt Supply DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE (K44) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the CMP Sensor harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the voltage of the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Select the appropriate voltage reading.

      Voltage is above 5.2 volts 

      • Go To  4

      Voltage is between 4.8 and 5.2 volts 

      • Go To  5

      Voltage is below 4.8 volts 

      • Go To  11
  4. CHECK THE (K44) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Remove the ASD Relay.
    4. Connect a jumper wire between cavity 30 and cavity 87 of the ASD Relay connector.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Measure the voltage of the (K44) CMP Position Sensor Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the voltage below 1.0 volt?

      Yes 

      • Go To  14

      No 

      • Repair the (K44) Camshaft Position Sensor Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE (K844) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT 
    1. Measure the voltage of the (K844) CMP Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Select the appropriate voltage reading.

      Voltage is above 5.2 volts 

      • Repair the (K844) CMP 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to voltage.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      Voltage is between 4.8 and 5.2 volts 

      • Go To  6

      Voltage is below 4.8 volts 

      • Go To  8
  6. CHECK THE (K944) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit between the CMP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Repair the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK FOR A DAMAGED CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR OR CAMSHAFT 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the CMP Sensor.
    3. Inspect the CMP Sensor for conditions such as loose mounting screws, damage, or cracks.
    4. Inspect the Camshaft Tone Wheel for conditions such as damage, debris or cracked teeth.

      Is there any evidence of these conditions?

      Yes 

      • Replace the damaged Camshaft Position Sensor or Camshaft Tone Wheel in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  14
  8. CHECK THE (K844) CMP 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K844) CMP 5-Volt Supply circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

      • Repair the (K844) CMP 5-Volt Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  9. CHECK THE (K844) CMP SENSOR 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (K844) CMP Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K844) CMP Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K844) CMP Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. CHECK FOR THE (K844) CMP SENSOR 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K944) CMP SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT 
    1. Check for continuity between the (K844) CMP Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Is there continuity between the (K844) CMP Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K844) CMP Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  14
  11. CHECK THE (K44) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  12

      No 

      • Repair the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  12. CHECK THE (K44) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  13
  13. CHECK FOR THE (K44) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K944) CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT 
    1. Check for continuity between the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit and the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.

      Is there continuity between the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit and the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit for a short to the (K944) CMP Sensor Ground circuit.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  14
  14. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
