Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the PCM.
    3. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 MPH. Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
    4. Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
    5. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.

      Is the status Active for this DTC?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any cylinder misfire, Crank Sensor, MAF Sensor, or Fuel Injector DTCs or are DTCs P0131 or P0132 active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION 
    1. Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM .

      Were any fuel system problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR LEAKS 
    1. Perform the Engine Diagnosis and Testing INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION test procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION .

      Is there evidence of a leak?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS 
    1. Perform the CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS diagnostic procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .

      Were any Exhaust System leaks found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK EGR SYSTEM FOR A LEAK 
    1. Look for visible signs (soot streaks) of an external EGR leak.

      Were any EGR leaks found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE O2 SENSOR FOR EXCESSIVE SOOT BUILDUP 
    NOTE:

    Excessive soot build up can be caused by over fueling. If excessive soot build up is present, the fuel system operation should be checked and the O2 sensor should be cleaned.

    1. Remove the O2 Sensor.
    2. Using pressurized shop air, blow out the soot deposits by applying the pressurized shop air directly into the center hole of the sensor.
    3. Reinstall the O2 Sensor.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    6. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    7. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 MPH. Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
    8. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

  8. CHECK THE OXYGEN SENSOR FOR PROPER OPERATION 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Replace the Oxygen Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, OXYGEN, REMOVAL .
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    5. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    6. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 MPH. Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is the status Active for this DTC?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

  9. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
