Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    5. Start the engine.
    6. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
      NOTE:

It may be necessary to drive the vehicle to meet the conditions to set this DTC, try to repeat the conditions in which the fault originally set by reviewing the Freeze Frame data.

    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC reset?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
    NOTE:

Make sure the coolant level and condition are within specifications before continuing with this Diagnostic.

    NOTE:

DANGER: Never open the cooling system when the engine is hot. The system is under pressure. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury including extreme burns, scalding, or fatal injury. Allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system.

    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

Are there any Engine Coolant Temperature, Ambient Air Temperature, Camshaft Position, or Crankshaft Position Sensor DTCs active or pending?

      Yes

      • Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX .

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE THERMOSTAT FOR PROPER OPERATION
    NOTE:

This test works best if performed on a cold engine (cold soak).

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, read the ECT Deg value. If the engine was allowed to sit overnight (cold soak), the temperature value should be a value that is somewhere close to the ambient temperature.
    3. Start the Engine.
    4. During engine warm-up, monitor the ECT Temperature value on the scan tool. The temperature value change should be a smooth transition from start up to normal operating temp 88°C (190°F). Also monitor the actual coolant temperature with a thermometer.
      NOTE:

As the engine warms up to operating temperature, the actual coolant temperature (thermometer reading) and the scan tool, ECT Temperature value should stay relatively close to each other.

    5. Using the appropriate service information, determine the proper opening temperature of the thermostat.

Did the Thermostat open at the proper temperature?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

  4. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes

      No
