Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any Fuel System or driveability DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  2
  2. CHECK FOR INTAKE SYSTEM LEAK OR RESTRICTION 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Perform a thorough inspection of the intake system. Look for any leaks or restrictions. Pay special attention to the Charge Air Cooler and hoses.
    3. Remove the Mass Air Flow Sensor from the inlet tube.
    4. Seal off and/or plug the where the MAF sensor was removed.
    5. Connect the smoke machine 84-04 to the intake system where possible and begin injecting smoke into the system.
    6. Observe all intake system components for evidence of smoke leakage.

      Were any leaks or restrictions found?

      Yes 

      • Repair the leak or restriction in the intake system.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR A LEAK OR RESTRICTION 
    1. Perform a thorough inspection of the exhaust system. Look for any leaks or restrictions.

      Were any leaks or restrictions found?

      Yes 

      • Repair the leak or restriction in the exhaust system.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE EGR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE 
    1. Perform a thorough inspection of the EGR system. Look for signs of a leak or restriction.

      Is the EGR system operating properly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the EGR System as needed.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE 
    1. Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM .

      Is the fuel system operation normal?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Repair the fuel system as needed.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. CHECK THE O2 SENSOR OPERATION 
    1. Install the Oxygen Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
    2. Connect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Connect the O2 Sensor harness connector.
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. It may be necessary to test drive the vehicle to confirm repair.
    6. Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is the DTC Active?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

  7. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the poor connections.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
