Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. Perform several key starts of the engine.
    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is the DTC active?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

Are there any Starter Relay Control circuit DTCs in the PCM or BCM active or pending?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE BATTERY CONDITION
    1. Using the approved Battery tester, check the Battery state of charge.

Did the Battery pass the load test?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

  4. CHECK THE (T760) IN-RUSH RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
      WARNING:

When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    2. Disconnect the ICR Relay C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the voltage between ground and the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit at the ICR Relay C1 harness connector.

      Is there any voltage present?

      Yes

      • Go To  5

      No

      • Go To  6
  5. CHECK THE (T760) IN-RUSH RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER VOLTAGE SUPPLY
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PDC C4 harness connector.
    3. Check for continuity between the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit and all other circuits at the PDC C4 harness connector.

Is there continuity between the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit and any other circuits?

      Yes

      • Repair the short between the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit and the circuit that showed continuity.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 3.2L .

      No

  6. CHECK THE IN-RUSH CURRENT RELAY FOR PROPER OPERATION
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the (A8) Fused Battery Cable from the In-Rush Current Relay.
    3. Remove the (A8) Battery Starter Feed Cable from the In-Rush Current Relay.
      NOTE:

These are live Battery Feeds. Be careful to insulate and/or isolate the cable so that it cannot make contact with any engine ground.

    4. Measure the resistance across the terminals of the In-Rush Current Relay.
      NOTE:

The relay is normally closed when not energized and therefore not passing through the resistor inside the relay.

Is the resistance below 2.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • The In-Rush Current Relay is not stuck closed at this time. This may be an intermittent condition. Try energizing and de-energizing the relay several times while testing continuity across the relay to check for an intermittent stuck condition.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 3.2L .

      No
