Parking Brake: Description

The Electric Park Brake (EPB) consist of the following components:

Electric park brake switch and indicator
Electric park brake control module
Two electromechanical motor gear units attached to conventional sliding calipers
Communication to other modules allowing seamless operation of the electric parking brake

The electromechanical motor gear units attach directly to the rear brake calipers and provide clamp load through the caliper transferred to the brake rotor.

The motors are controlled by a bi-directional 12-volt feed and ground through the electric brake control module.

The module does not maintain voltage to the motors to keep the parking brake applied. Once engaged, the parking brake remains engaged even if the motors are disconnected.

CAUTION:

If the Electric Park Brake (EPB) switch is actuated with the caliper removed from the caliper bracket and still connected electrically, the EPB motor will fully extend causing damage to the caliper piston. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable before servicing any EPB component.
