Diagnostic Test

- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
Verify that the Stop Lamp Switch is installed correctly on the vehicle before proceeding.
- With the scan tool, read Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Environmental Data and any DTCs.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read BCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Test complete. The condition or conditions that originally set this DTC are not present at this time. Using the wiring diagrams as a guide, check all related splices and connectors for signs of water intrusion, corrosion, pushed out or bent terminals and correct pin tension.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL DTCS
- With the scan tool, read DTCs from all modules.
Does the scan tool display any Stop Lamp Switch related DTCs as active?
Yes
- Perform the Stop Lamp Switch related diagnostic test(s) before proceeding with this test.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- With the scan tool, read DTCs from all modules.
- CHECK THE STOP LAMP BRAKE SIGNAL 1 FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
The (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit is normally OPEN when the brake pedal is NOT PRESSED.
- Make sure the ignition is on.
- With the Brake Pedal PRESSED, back-probe at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and measure the voltage on the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Replace the Stop Lamp Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SWITCH, STOP LAMP, REMOVAL .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE STOP LAMP BRAKE SIGNAL 2 FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
The (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit is normally CLOSED when the brake pedal is NOT PRESSED.
- With the Brake Pedal NOT PRESSED, back-probe at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and measure the voltage on the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Replace the Stop Lamp Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SWITCH, STOP LAMP, REMOVAL .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- With the Brake Pedal NOT PRESSED, back-probe at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and measure the voltage on the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit.
- CHECK THE (B135) BRAKE SIGNAL 1 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector.
- Disconnect the BCM C4 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE (B134) BRAKE SIGNAL 2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- Check for continuity between ground and the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector.
- CHECK THE (B135) BRAKE SIGNAL 1 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance of the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit between the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and the BCM C4 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit for an open.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- Measure the resistance of the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit between the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and the BCM C4 harness connector.
- CHECK THE (B134) BRAKE SIGNAL 2 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance of the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit between the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and the BCM C4 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit for an open.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- Measure the resistance of the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit between the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and the BCM C4 harness connector.
- CHECK RELATED BCM HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all BCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all BCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Body Control Module (BCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, BODY CONTROL (BCM), REMOVAL .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
