Chime Warning System

The chime warning system operates on battery current received from the Body Control Module (BCM) on a non-switched fused B(+) circuit so that the system may operate regardless of the ignition status. The chime warning system also monitors the ignition switch status so that some chime features are functional only when the status of the ignition switch is ON, while other features are functional regardless of the ignition switch status.

In nearly every instance the chime warning system simply provides an audible output to support a visual indication provided by a gauge or an indicator in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), or a textual message displayed by the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC). Outputs of the system include the following:

• Battery Voltage Low Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the BATTERY VOLTAGE LOW  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the monitored electrical system voltage is low. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Blind Spot Detection Temporarily Unavailable Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the BLIND SPOT DETECTION TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system has been automatically disabled temporarily.
• Blind Spot Detection Unavailable - Astronomy Zone Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the BLIND SPOT DETECTION UNAVAILABLE - ASTRONOMY ZONE  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional BSM system has been automatically turned OFF.
• Blind Spot Detection Unavailable - Wipe Off Rear Bumper Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the BLIND SPOT DETECTION UNAVAILABLE - WIPE OFF REAR BUMPER  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional BSM system has been automatically disabled due to an accumulation of road film, snow or ice on the rear bumper fascia that must be removed. This chime will occur each time the BSM system features would normally be employed.
• Blind Spot System Off Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the BLIND SPOT SYSTEM OFF  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional BSM system has been manually turned OFF by the vehicle operator.
• Brake Fluid Low Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the BRAKE FLUID LOW  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the fluid level in the brake master cylinder is low. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Check Fuel Cap Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the CHECK FUEL CAP  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the fuel cap is loose or not installed while the engine is running.
• Door Open Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when a DOOR OPEN  or DOORS OPEN  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a door is, or multiple doors are not closed or completely latched while the vehicle is moving.
• Driver Seat Belt Unbuckled Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the DRIVER SEATBELT UNBUCKLED  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the driver side front seat belt is unbuckled while the vehicle is moving.
• Engine Temperature Too Hot Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the ENGINE TEMPERATURE TOO HOT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the monitored engine coolant temperature is too hot. This chime will only recur during an ignition cycle if the engine coolant temperature cycles below the temperature threshold and back to above that threshold once again.
• Front Seat Belts Unbuckled Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the FRONT SEAT BELTS UNBUCKLED  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that both the driver side and passenger side front seat belts are unbuckled while the vehicle is moving.
• Fuel Low Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the FUEL LOW  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the monitored fuel level in the fuel tank is low. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Headlight Out Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the HEADLIGHT OUT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) has been set for a fault monitored in a low beam headlight circuit. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• High Beam Headlight Out Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHT OUT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a high beam headlight circuit. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Ignition Or Accessory On, Lights On Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the IGNITION OR ACCESSORY ON, LIGHTS ON  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the status of the ignition switch, an accessory system and the exterior lighting is ON with the driver side front door open. The chimes will continue to sound until the status of the ignition switch, all accessory systems and the exterior lighting system is Off, or until the driver side front door is closed, whichever occurs first.
• Inflate Tire Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the INFLATE TIRE TO XX Kpa (PSI)  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system has detected a tire with a low inflation pressure. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Key Fob Has Left Vehicle Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the KEY FOB HAS LEFT VEHICLE  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional Keyless Go (KG) system will not operate until a valid key fob is detected within the vehicle.
• Key Fob Not Detected Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the KEY FOB NOT DETECTED  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional KG system will not operate until a valid key fob is detected within the vehicle.
• Key In Ignition And Lights On Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the KEY IN IGNITION AND LIGHTS ON  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the key is in the ignition switch and the exterior lighting system is turned OFF. The chimes will continue to sound until the key is removed from the ignition switch or the exterior lighting system is turned OFF, whichever occurs first.
• Key In Ignition Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a fast rate when the KEY IN IGNITION  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the key is in the ignition switch with the driver side front door open. The chimes will continue to sound until the key is removed from the ignition switch or the driver side front door is closed, whichever occurs first.
• Left Turn Signal Light Out Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the LEFT TURN SIGNAL LIGHT OUT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a left turn signal light circuit. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Lights On Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the LIGHTS ON  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the exterior lighting is turned ON while the status of the ignition switch is OFF. The chimes will continue to sound until the exterior lighting is turned OFF or the ignition switch transitions to a status other than OFF, whichever occurs first.
• Oil Change Due Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the OIL CHANGE DUE  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the monitored engine oil change interval has been surpassed. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Oil Pressure Low Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the OIL PRESSURE LOW  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the monitored engine oil pressure is low.
• Park Assist Sensor Fail Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the PARK ASSIST SENSOR FAIL  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a sensor of the optional park assist system has failed.
• Park Assist System Disabled Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the PARK ASSIST SYSTEM DISABLED  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional park assist system has been automatically disabled due to a fault in a monitored circuit or component of the system. This chime will occur each time the park assist system features would normally be employed.
• Park Assist Unavailable - Wipe Off Sensors Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the PARK ASSIST UNAVAILABLE - WIPE OFF SENSORS  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the optional park assist system has been automatically disabled due to an accumulation of road film, snow or ice on the sensor membrane that must be removed. This chime will occur each time the park assist system features would normally be employed.
• Parking Brake Engaged Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the parking brake is engaged while the vehicle is moving. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Parking Light Out Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the PARKING LIGHT OUT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a parking light circuit. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Passenger Seat Belt Unbuckled Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the PASSENGER SEATBELT UNBUCKLED  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the passenger side front seat belt is unbuckled while the vehicle is moving.
• Plate Light Out Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the PLATE LIGHT OUT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a license plate light circuit. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Rain Sensor Failure Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the RAIN SENSOR FAILURE  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in the rain sensor in vehicles equipped with the optional automatic windshield wiper system. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Reverse Light Out Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the REVERSE LIGHT OUT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a reverse (or backup) light circuit. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Right Turn Signal Light Out Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the RIGHT TURN SIGNAL LIGHT OUT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a right turn signal light circuit. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Airbag System Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the SERVICE AIRBAG SYSTEM  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Airbag Warning Light  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the SERVICE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in the airbag indicator circuit of the SRS. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Antilock Brake System Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the SERVICE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the Antilock Brake System (ABS). This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Blind Spot System Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the SERVICE BLIND SPOT SYSTEM  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the optional BSM system. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Electronic Braking System Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the SERVICE ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the electronic braking system. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Electronic Throttle Control Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the SERVICE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Keyless System Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the SERVICE KEYLESS SYSTEM  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the optional Passive Entry Keyless Go (PEKG) system.
• Service Park Assist System Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the SERVICE PARK ASSIST SYSTEM  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the optional park assist system. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Power Steering Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the SERVICE POWER STEERING  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the electric power steering system. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Service Tire Pressure System Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime each time the SERVICE TIRE PRESSURE SYSTEM  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that a DTC has been set for a fault monitored in a circuit or component of the TPM system. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.
• Traction Control Off Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the TRACTION CONTROL OFF  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) has been manually turned OFF by the vehicle operator.
• Trunk Open Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the LIFTGATE OPEN  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the liftgate is not closed or completely latched while the vehicle is moving.
• Turn Signal Indication  - The IPC relay will generate repetitive clicks at a slow rate whenever a turn signal is active. The clicks will occur at a fast rate when a turn signal bulb outage is detected.
• Turn Signal On Reminder  - The IPC transducer will generate repetitive chimes at a slow rate when the TURN SIGNAL ON  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This reminder indicates that a turn signal has been active continuously for 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) with the vehicle moving. The hazard warning flashers will not activate this chime feature.
• Vehicle Not In Park Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the VEHICLE NOT IN PARK  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the PARK position of the transmission is not engaged.
• Washer Fluid Low Warning  - The IPC transducer will generate one short chime when the WASHER FLUID LOW  textual message is displayed in the EVIC. This warning indicates that the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir is low. This chime will only occur once during any ignition cycle.

The IPC provides chime service for all available features in the chime warning system, except for the audible warning function provided by the Radio for the optional park assist system. The IPC relies upon its internal programming, numerous hard wired inputs and electronic message inputs received from other electronic modules over the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus to provide the chime warning system features. The programming of the IPC determines the priority of each chime request input that is received, as well as the rate and duration of each chime that is to be generated.
