Park Assist System: Notes
A park assist system is an optional factory-installed electronic parking aid. There are also three distinct versions of the park assist system. The three versions can be readily identified by noting the quantity of ultrasonic sensors installed and the sensor location in the rear or the front and rear bumper fascias. Additional details of each of these versions and their components can be found elsewhere in this service information.
- Rear Park Assist - The Rear Park Assist (RPA) alerts the vehicle operator to obstacles located in the path immediately behind the vehicle. This system has four radar sensors, all installed in the rear bumper fascia.
- Front and Rear Park Assist - The Front and Rear Park Assist (FRPA) alerts the vehicle operator to obstacles located in the path immediately in front of the vehicle as well as those behind. This system has ten radar sensors, four installed in the rear bumper fascia and six installed in the front bumper fascia. In vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the FRPA can also provide an additional autonomous braking alert (also known as stop and release) feature when the automatic transmission gear selector is in Reverse (R ) and certain obstacles are detected at the rear of the vehicle. The autonomous braking feature is not available in vehicles equipped with a manual transmission.
- Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist - The Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist (PPPA) includes all of the features of the FRPA, but adds semiautomatic parallel and perpendicular parking assistance features. This system has twelve radar sensors, six installed in the rear bumper fascia and six installed in the front bumper fascia.
Hard wired circuitry connects the RPA, FRPA or PPPA components to the electrical system of the vehicle. These hard wired circuits are integral to several wire harnesses, which are routed throughout the vehicle and retained by many different methods. These circuits may be connected to each other, to the vehicle electrical system and to the RPA, FRPA or PPPA components through the use of a combination of soldered splices, splice block connectors and many different types of wire harness terminal connectors and insulators. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The wiring information includes wiring diagrams, pin out and location views for the various wire harness connectors, splices and grounds.
The RPA, FRPA and PPPA system components cannot be adjusted or repaired. If any of these components is damaged or ineffective, that component must be replaced.
