Sensor, Water In Fuel: Description

The Water In Fuel (WIF) sensor (1) is located in the fuel filter housing. The WIF sensor (1) detects the presence of water in the fuel. If water is present in the fuel, a signal is sent to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the PCM signals the instrument cluster, over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus, to illuminate the water in fuel warning. The WIF sensor is NOT a serviceable item. If diagnosis has lead you to replace the WIF sensor then the whole fuel filter/water separator assembly must be replaced.
