Pump, Fuel Injection, High Pressure: Description

- The fuel injection pressure pump (1) is secured to a special cast support (3) that is attached to the front of the cylinder head and hangs out over the intake side of the engine. The support also serves as part of the timing belt cover. A molded rubber fuel return hose (2) is connected to a port near the front of the pump, while the fuel supply is secured to a port (4) near the back of the pump using a quick-connect fitting. The high pressure port (5) and the fuel pressure regulator are located on the rear of the pump.
- The pressure pump shaft is equipped with a toothed drive sprocket that is driven and timed along with the camshafts by the timing belt on the crankshaft. The timing belt includes yellow reference marks for correct timing of the pressure pump and the camshafts to crankshaft rotation. The pump for this common rail injection system is known as a radial jet pump because pressure is achieved using three pistons arranged at equal 120 degree intervals in a radial orientation around the pump shaft rotation axis.
- Most components of the fuel injection pressure pump are not serviceable. If any part of the pump is damaged or ineffective, the entire pump unit must be replaced. The pump support and the pump drive sprocket are available for separate service replacement.
