Camshaft, Engine: Removal

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
Remove the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL .
Remove the cylinder head cover, engine timing cover and camshaft sprocket. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, REMOVAL .
Remove the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG, REMOVAL .

Prepare the (special tool #10259B, Compressor, MultiAir® Spring) for installation on the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA):
- Position the four compressor assemblies (1) at the 2.4L markings.
- Position the two stops (2) at the 2.4L markings.
- Loosen the compressor assemblies (1) to fit over the VVAA valve and spring assemblies (clockwise rotation).

NOTE:
Attempting to remove or install the camshaft without special tool 10259A/B installed on the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) will result in damage to the VVAA, valves or cylinder head.
Install the (special tool #10259B, Compressor, MultiAir® Spring) (1) to the VVAA.
Tighten the compressor assemblies (2) until the valve springs are fully compressed.

NOTE:

The No. 1 (front) and No. 6 (rear) bearing caps are not marked, as they are unique. The middle caps are marked E1 through E4, starting from the front of the engine. The markings on the caps will be upside down when viewed from the exhaust side of engine.

CAUTION:

DO NOT STAMP OR STRIKE THE CAMSHAFT BEARING CAPS. SEVERE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR TO THE BEARING CAPS.

Index mark the location and position on each camshaft bearing cap.
Slowly remove the thirteen exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts (1) one turn at a time then remove the camshaft bearing caps.
Remove the camshaft.
