Air Bag, Side Curtain: Installation: Airbag
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.
To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.
To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the side curtain airbag, or becoming entrapped between the side curtain airbag cushion and the headliner. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.
The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged side curtain airbag (also known as Side AirBag Inflatable Curtain/SABIC). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE . If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Position the SABIC and inflator (4) into the vehicle as a unit.
- Position the inflator mounting bracket to the inner roof rail above the deploy bracket (1) on the B-pillar (6) and engage the metal hooks on the inflator bracket into the slots in the inner roof rail (2).
- Engage the plastic push-in retainers that temporarily secure the SABIC to the inner roof rail.
- Install the two screws (5) that secure the inflator bracket above the B-pillar and the mounting tab to the inner roof rail above the rear door opening. Tighten the screw to the proper torque. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the connector insulator (3) of the body wire harness take out for the SABIC to the inflator initiator connector receptacle at the rear of the inflator by pressing straight in on the connector. Be certain that the connector is fully engaged in its receptacle, then push the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock straight into the connector to lock it into place.
- Engage the plastic push-in retainers that secure the SABIC (1) to the inner roof rail above the A-pillar and to the inner A-pillar (2).
- Install the two screws (2) that secure SABIC mounting tabs to the inner roof rail above the A-pillar and to the inner A-pillar. Tighten the screws to the proper torque.
Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the nut (3) that secures the front tether to the inner A-pillar near the belt line. Tighten the nut to the proper torque. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Engage the plastic push-in retainers that secure the SABIC (1) to the C and D-pillar deploy bracket (4) above the C (3) and D-pillars.
- Install the two screws that secure the SABIC mounting tabs to the inner roof rail (2). Tighten the screws to the proper torque. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the screw that secures the SABIC rear tether to the inner roof rail. Tighten the screw to the proper torque. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the headliner into the vehicle. Refer to HEADLINER, INSTALLATION .
- Do not connect the negative battery cable at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
