Differential And Ring Gear: Disassembly: 4WD

NOTE:
There are no differential gears in the carrier housing of the 948TE Four Wheel Drive version transmission. The 2 speed PTU is equipped with a differential for the front wheels.
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Place the transmission on a suitable clean work surface.
- Position a suitable drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
- Remove the drain plug and allow the fluid to drain into the drain pan.
- Using tool (special tool #7794-A, Remover, Seal) and (special tool #C-637, Slide Hammer, Universal), remove the differential adapter sleeve.
- Remove the bellhousing from the transmission. Refer to BELLHOUSING, REMOVAL .
- Remove the differential housing (1) from the transmission.
- Remove the bolts (2) holding the ring gear (1) to the differential housing.
- Separate the ring gear (1) from the differential housing (2).
- Separate the two halves (1) of the differential housing (2) to gain access to the stub shaft that links the PTU to the left front wheel.
- Using a suitable screw driver, remove the snap-ring holding the stub shaft bearing in the differential housing.
- Using a solid surface, drive the stub shaft (2) and bearing out of the differential housing (1).
- Separate the stub shaft from the differential housing.
- Using tool (special tool #7794-A, Remover, Seal) and (special tool #C-637, Slide Hammer, Universal), remove the stub shaft needle roller bearing from the differential housing.
- Using suitable snap-ring pliers (2), remove the snap-ring holding the ball bearing (3) on the stub shaft (1).
- Using tool (special tool #8228, Installer, Bearing) (1) and an arbor press, remove the ball bearing (2) from the stub shaft (3).
