Stand Alone Switch
There are two types of hood ajar switches used on this vehicle. This information covers the stand alone hood ajar switch (1) that is optional equipment on some vehicles. A latch mounted hood ajar switch is standard on most vehicles, but is discussed elsewhere in this service information.
The stand alone switch has a molded plastic switch body (5) with an integral molded connector receptacle (1) on the lower end containing two terminal pins. The switch is connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the headlamp and dash wire harness. Two integral latches (2) lock the switch into a keyed mounting hole in the switch mounting bracket. The mounting bracket is secured to the left front fender load beam. The switch plunger (3) extends through a mounting collar (4) and a sleeve-like retainer ring on the upper end of the switch body. The retainer ring has a one time, self-adjustment feature that is activated after the switch is installed by closing the hood. The input of this switch is used exclusively for the Engine Stop-Start (ESS) system, which is optional equipment with certain optional engines.
Once a stand alone hood ajar switch is installed it cannot be readjusted or repaired. If the switch is damaged, ineffective or requires readjustment, it must be replaced with a new unit. The stand alone hood ajar switch bracket is available for separate service replacement.
