Sensor, Pinch: Description
Vehicles equipped with an optional power operated liftgate system use two pinch sensors (1) (also known as anti-pinch sensors). One sensor is located on each side jamb of the liftgate, extending from the belt line to just below the liftgate header. Externally, these pinch sensors appear very similar to a synthetic rubber weather strip that is secured by five plastic clips (2) to the side jamb of the liftgate. However, internally each pinch sensor has two electrically conductive membranes (also known as tape switches), a diagnostic resistor and a plastic carrier. The right side pinch sensor also contains a thermistor.
Each pinch sensor has a short pigtail wire and connector (4) that exits through a grommet (3) on the lower end of the inboard side of each unit and passes through a dedicated hole in the side jamb of the liftgate near the belt line into the interior of the liftgate. Concealed within the liftgate each sensor is connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the liftgate wire harness.
A pinch sensor cannot be adjusted or repaired. If damaged or ineffective, the entire sensor unit must be replaced.
