Case Assembly, Differential, TRU-LOK: Removal: Removal

- Remove the differential fill plug (2).
- Remove the differential cover (1) and drain fluid.
- Remove the axle shafts. Refer to SHAFT, AXLE, REMOVAL .
- Remove Tru-Lok harness from the coil (1) and indicator switch (2).
- Remove Tru-Lok coil connector (1) bolt (2).
- Remove Tru-Lok coil connector (3) from the axle housing and remove coil harness from the connector using an appropriate tool such as a pocket screwdriver (1) to release the locking tab (2).NOTE:
If the coil connector becomes damaged during removal it must be replaced.
- Loosen differential bearing cap (1) bolts.
- Position Spreader (special tool #W-129-B, Spreader, Differential) (1) with Adapter Kit (special tool #6987B, Adapter Kit, Axle Spreader) on differential locating holes. Install hold-down clamps and tighten the turnbuckle finger-tight.
- Install a Pin (special tool #C-3288-B, Set, Alignment Pins) (4) at the left side of the differential housing. Attach Dial Indicator (special tool #C-3339A, Set, Dial Indicator) (2) to pin. Load indicator plunger against the opposite side of the housing spreader (3) zero the indicator.
- Spread housing while measuring the distance with the dial indicator.CAUTION:
Never spread housing over 0.50 mm (0.020 in). Failure to follow these instructions will damage the housing.
- Remove dial indicator.
- Holding differential case in position, remove differential bearing cap bolts.
- Remove coil anti-rotation bracket (2) from the bearing cap, then remove both bearing caps.
- Remove differential case from housing and tag differential bearing cups and shims location.
- Remove spreader from housing.NOTE:
Do not use water, steam, kerosene or gasoline for cleaning.
- Clean the housing cavity with flushing oil, light engine oil or lint free cloth.
