Theory Of Operation

Cam phasing is required on a cold start in order to meet the emissions targets. On cold starts, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) commands the Camshafts to a predetermined target position and monitors the Camshafts to ensure that they are in the desired positions. The Cold Start Monitor diagnostic is only run on the Exhaust Camshafts on the 3.6L engine.
NOTE:
There are four camshafts and two Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensors. Each CMP Sensor will detect the position of both camshafts on its correlating engine bank.
