Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 Jeep Wrangler and 2015 Jeep Wrangler. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair any system voltage DTCs before continuing with this test.

    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair any Oil Pump Solenoid, Engine Oil Pressure Sensor or Camshaft Position Solenoid Circuit Open DTCs before continuing with this test.

    1. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. ENGINE OIL/ENGINE MECHANICAL 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. The following items should be checked before continuing with this procedure. Failure to do so may lead to misdiagnosis.
      • LOW ENGINE OIL LEVEL
      • AERATED ENGINE OIL
      • INCORRECT ENGINE OIL FILTER (DOES NOT MEET OEM SPECIFICATIONS)
      • DETERIORATED OR DIRTY OIL
      • CONTAMINATED ENGINE OIL
      • INCORRECT ENGINE OIL VISCOSITY

      Were any of the above conditions present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the engine oiling or mechanical condition (i.e. improper oil drain back, oil sludge, damaged oil pump, pick-up tube or seal, etc.).
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE AND ENGINE MECHANICAL CONDITION 
    1. Install the applicable adaptor to the oil filter cap and install an oil pressure gauge to the adaptor. If the adaptor is not available, monitor the oil pressure reading with the scan tool.
    2. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
    3. Monitor the engine oil pressure reading on the gauge or scan tool.
      NOTE:

      If the oil pressure is below 14 psi or oscillating excessively, it can cause a delay in Cam Phaser movement sufficient enough to set a slow response DTC.

      Is the oil pressure reading stable and above 14.0 psi?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

      • Repair the engine oiling or mechanical condition (i.e. improper oil drain back, oil sludge, damaged oil pump, pick-up tube or seal, etc.).
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  4. CHECK THE CAM PHASER POSITION 
    NOTE:

    If a Cam Phaser or Oil Control Valve is stuck, there may also be a Crankshaft/Camshaft Timing Misalignment and/or Multiple Cylinder Misfire DTC present.

    1. With the scan tool, monitor and compare the Bank 2 Exhaust Cam desired  position value with the Bank 2 Exhaust Cam actual  position value.

      Is the difference between the actual value and the desired value more than 6.0 degrees?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Go To  6
  5. DETERMINE IF THE CAM PHASER IS ELECTRICALLY OR MECHANICALLY STUCK 
    1. While the engine is at idle, disconnect the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.
    2. The Bank 2 Exhaust Cam actual position value should change to lock pin with the solenoid disconnected. The Exhaust Cam position should be at approximately 117.0 degrees at lock pin.

      Did the Bank 2 Exhaust Cam actual value change to within 6.0 degrees of the lock pin position with the solenoid unplugged?

      Yes 

      • Check the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit is not shorted to voltage, replace the PCM in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  9
  6. CHECK THE VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 GROUND CIRCUIT 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Ground circuit at the VVT Exhaust Control 2/2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 2.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Repair the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK THE (K277) VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 CONTROL CIRCUIT ACTUATION 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, actuate the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2.
    3. Measure the voltage on the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Control circuit in the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.
      NOTE:

      The VVT Solenoid Driver circuit is a 12 volt PWM circuit. The voltage reading will vary between 10.0 and 12.0 volts with the connector unplugged depending on the actuation percentage that is selected for the solenoid.

      Is there voltage present and does it match approximately to the percentage selected?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Go To  11
  8. CHECK THE VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 OPERATION 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2.
    3. Reconnect the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, actuate the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 on and off several times.

      Does the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 move freely during actuation?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

      • Replace the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  9. CHECK THE CAMSHAFT 2/2 OIL CONTROL VALVE OPERATION 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the spring loaded spool valve on the Oil Control Valve.
      NOTE:

      The spring loaded spool valve should be flush with the surface of the Oil Control Valve when at rest.

    3. Push and release the spring loaded spool valve against the return spring with a small punch.
      NOTE:

      The spring loaded spool valve should move freely without binding and return to the flush position if there are no problems with the Oil Control Valve.

      Was the spring loaded spool valve flush and able to move freely?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Replace the Camshaft 2/2 Oil Control Valve in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  10. VERIFY THAT THE VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 IS ABLE TO MOVE THE PHASER 
    1. Move the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 to another VVT Solenoid position that does not have a fault logged against it.
    2. Reconnect the solenoid harness connectors.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the PCM.
    5. Test drive the vehicle under the conditions in which the fault was set.
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

      Did the DTC move with the solenoid or stay with the original Camshaft?

      Moved with the solenoid 

      • Replace the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      Stayed with the original Camshaft 

  11. CHECK THE (K277) VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Check for continuity between ground and the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Control circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Control circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Ground circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  12
  12. CHECK THE (K277) VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    CAUTION:

    Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    1. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    2. Measure the resistance of the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Control circuit between the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  13

      No 

      • Repair the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  13. CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
    2. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    5. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    6. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    9. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    10. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    11. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
