Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
If the P0685 and P0688 DTCs are both present, diagnose and repair the P0685 DTC before the P0688.
NOTE:If equipped with a removable relay, verify that there are no concerns with the circuits and fuses that supply power to the ASD Relay. Look for bent or corroded terminals. Verify that the ASD relay is not defective (exchange with known good relay to check operation).
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Turn the ignition off.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector and connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) in-line with the PCM connector and harness.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage on each of the (F342) ASD Relay Output circuits at GPEC Adaptor.
Is the voltage equal to Battery voltage at each terminal when the ignition is turned on?
Yes
- Check for any Service Bulletins that may apply. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Powertrain Control Module connectors.
- If no concerns are found, Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL [EHD, ERB], REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- Turn the ignition off.
- CHECK THE (F342) ASD CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT(S) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Disconnect the appropriate TIPM harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and each of the (F342) ASD Control Output circuits at the TIPM harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and any of the (F342) ASD Control Output circuits?
Yes
- Repair the (F342) ASD Control Output circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE (F342) ASD CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT(S) FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance of each (F342) ASD Control Output circuit between the TIPM harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the (F342) ASD Control Output circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS
- Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
- Disconnect all TIPM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all TIPM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Totally Integrated Power Module in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
No
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Test complete.
