Diagnostic Test

  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Verify that there are no concerns with the circuits and fuses that supply power to the ASD relay. If equipped with a removable relay, Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that the ASD relay is not defective (exchange with known good relay to check operation).

    NOTE:

    If any of the following component DTCs have set along with P0688, diagnose them first before continuing: Ignition Coil(s), Fuel Injector(s), ASD Control Circuit.

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.

      Is the DTC Active at this time?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) 
    1. Turn the Ignition off.
    2. Connect the appropriate PCM pinout adaptor in line with the PCM connector and harness.
    3. Turn the Ignition on, engine not running.
    4. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, Measure the voltage at each of the (F342) ASD Control Output circuits at PCM.

      Were there any problems found with the voltage readings?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Powertrain Control Module connectors.
      • Check for any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
      • If no concerns are found, Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, REMOVAL .
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  3. (F342) ASD CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT(S) SHORTED TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the appropriate TIPM harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance between ground and each of the (F342) ASD Control Output circuits in the TIPM harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 100 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to ground in the (F342) ASD Control Output circuit(s).
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. (F342) ASD CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT(S) OPEN 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance of each (F342) ASD Control Output circuits from the TIPM harness connector to the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the open in the (F342) ASD Control Output circuit(s).
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE 
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the related TIPM harness connector and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the TIPM harness connector and Powertrain Control Module connectors.
    4. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were there any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Replace and program the Totally Integrated Power Module in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
