Diagnostic Test
- ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
Diagnose and repair any system voltage DTCs before continuing with this test.
NOTE:Diagnose and repair any CMP Sensor or CKP Sensor DTCs before continuing with this test.
NOTE:Diagnose and repair any Oil Pump Solenoid or Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit Open DTCs before continuing with this test.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read and record all DTCs in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for future reference.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Test drive the vehicle under the conditions in which the DTC is monitored, as outlined above.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Is the status Active for this DTC?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- MULTIPLE DTCs PRESENT
Were there multiple Camshaft Position Slow Response DTCs present?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Go To 4
- ENGINE OIL/ENGINE MECHANICAL NOTE:
The following items should be checked and considered when multiple Camshaft Position Slow Response DTCs are present. Failure to do so may lead to misdiagnosis.
- LOW ENGINE OIL LEVEL
- ENGINE OIL FILTER INCORRECT (DOES NOT MEET OEM SPECIFICATIONS)
- DETERIORATED OR DIRTY OIL
- ENGINE OIL CONTAMINATED (i.e., coolant and/or fuel)
- INCORRECT ENGINE OIL VISCOSITY
- ENGINE OIL AERATED
Were any of the above conditions present?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- CHECK THE VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 GROUND CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Ground circuit at the VVT Intake Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 2.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the VVT Intake Solenoid 2/2 Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K277) VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 DRIVER ACTUATION
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, actuate the VVT Intake Solenoid 2/2 to the ON (maximum) position.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 circuit in the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.NOTE:
The test light should be illuminated and bright. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Is the test light illuminated and bright?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Go To 8
- CHECK THE VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2.
- Reconnect the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, actuate the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 to the ON and OFF positions several times.
Does the VVT Intake Solenoid 2/2 move freely during actuation?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Replace the VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- VERIFY THAT THE VVT INTAKE SOLENOID 2/2 IS ABLE TO MOVE THE PHASER
- Turn the ignition off.
- Move the VVT Intake Solenoid 2/2 to another VVT Solenoid position that does not have a fault logged against it.
- Reconnect the VVT Intake Solenoid 2/2 harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the PCM.
- Test drive the vehicle under the conditions in which the DTC is monitored, as outlined above.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Did the DTC move with the phaser or stay with the original camshaft?
Moved with the phaser
- Replace the VVT Intake Solenoid 2/2.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
Stayed with the original position
- Replace the Cam Phaser assembly in accordance with the service information. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE TIMING, PHASER/OIL CONTROL VALVE, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K277) VVT EXHAUST SOLENOID 2/2 DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector and connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
- Measure the resistance of the (K277) VVT Exhaust 2/2 Driver circuit between the VVT Exhaust 2/2 Solenoid harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- Repair the (K277) VVT Exhaust Solenoid 2/2 Driver circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Turn the ignition off.
- CHECK THE VVT ACTUATOR/VARIABLE OIL PUMP SOLENOID GROUND CIRCUIT NOTE:
The VVT Solenoids and the Oil Pump Solenoid share a ground circuit. A faulty ground connection can cause multiple VVT Solenoid and/or Oil Pump Solenoid faults to set.
- Back probe the ground circuit at one of the VVT Solenoid harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, actuate the VVT Solenoid to the ON (maximum) position.
- Measure the voltage at the VVT Solenoid Ground circuit during actuation.NOTE:
There should be no voltage on the ground circuit if the circuit has a good ground.
- Repeat this check at all of the VVT Solenoids and the Oil Pump Solenoid.
Is there any voltage present on the ground circuit for any of the solenoids?
Yes
- Repair the ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE AND MECHANICAL CONDITION
- Install an oil pressure gauge and check the engine oil pressure.
- Check the engine mechanical condition (I.E. proper oil drain back, oil sludge, etc.)
Were any issues found?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repairs.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 11
- POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Turn the ignition off.
- Inspect the wiring and connectors at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
- Perform any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that apply.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
