Checking Camshaft End Play

  1. After camshafts are properly installed in cylinder head cover check end play of camshafts with a dial indicator. The end play should be between 0.10 mm - 0.55 mm.
    NOTE: If the camshaft end play is not within specification, measure thickness of the camshaft spacer. Camshaft spacer thickness should be 2.8 +/-.02 mm.
  2. Measure the camshaft end play with a dial indicator. The end play should be between 0.10 mm-0.55 mm.
  3. Install access hole plugs and gaskets at rear of cylinder head cover/intake manifold. Torque plugs to 80 N.m (59 ft. lbs.).
  4. Install cylinder head cover/intake manifold on engine block (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S) - INSTALLATION) .
  5. Align the camshafts and install camshaft alignment pins, VM1052 and VM1053 into the camshaft cover.
  6. Install timing belt inner cover (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN COVER(S) - INSTALLATION) .
    NOTE: Crankshaft must be rotated to the 90 degree ATDC, or the 3 O'clock position (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING - STANDARD PROCEDURE) .
  7. Install timing belt (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND SPROCKETS - INSTALLATION) .
  8. Install timing belt outer cover (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN COVER(S) - INSTALLATION) .
  9. Install generator (Refer to ELECTRICAL/CHARGING/GENERATOR - INSTALLATION) .
  10. Install vibration damper.
  11. Install cooling fan support (Refer to COOLING/ENGINE/RADIATOR FAN - INSTALLATION) .
  12. Install accessory drive belt (Refer to COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - INSTALLATION) .
  13. Install cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly. Refer to RADIATOR - FAN - VISCOUS .
  14. Refill cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  15. Connect negative battery cable.
