Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Dodge Pickup and 2004 Dodge Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Refer to VERIFICATION TESTS for appropriate verification test procedures.
  1. Check for any related TSBs.
    NOTE: Check for contaminants that may have damaged the O2 Sensor: contaminated fuel, unapproved silicone, oil and coolant.

    Ignition on, engine not running.

    With the DRBIII®, read DTCs and record the related Freeze Frame data.

    Is the Good Trip Counter displayed and equal to zero?

    1. Yes --> Go To 2
    2. No --> Refer to the SYMPTOM: INTERMITTENT CONDITION  Symptom (Diagnostic Procedure).

      Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5 .

  2. Start the engine.

    Inspect the exhaust for leaks between the engine and the related O2 Sensor.

    Are there any exhaust leaks?

    1. Yes --> Repair or replace the leaking exhaust parts as necessary.

      Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5 .

    2. No --> Go To 3
  3. Turn the ignition off.

    While backprobing, measure the voltage of the O2 Sensor Signal circuit between the O2 Sensor harness connector and PCM harness connector.

    NOTE: Ensure the voltmeter leads meet the terminals in the connector and that there is good terminal to wire connection and are connected for positive polarity.

    Start the engine.

    Allow the engine to idle.

    Is the voltage below 0.10 of a volt?

    1. Yes --> Go To 4
    2. No --> Repair the excessive resistance in the O2 Sensor Signal circuit.

      Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5 .

  4. Turn the ignition off.

    While backprobing, measure the voltage of the (K4) Sensor ground circuit between the O2 Sensor harness connector and PCM harness connector.

    NOTE: Ensure the voltmeter leads meet the terminals in the connector and that there is good terminal to wire connection.
    NOTE: Ensure the voltmeter leads are connected for positive polarity Start the engine.

    Allow the engine to idle.

    Is the voltage below 0.10 of a volt?

    1. Yes --> Go To 5
    2. No --> Repair the excessive resistance in the (K4) Sensor ground circuit.

      Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5 .

    NOTE: Turn the ignition off before continuing.
  5. If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair.
    1. Repair
      1. Replace the O2 Sensor Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5 .
