Module-Steering Control: Removal

WARNING:
To avoid personal injury or death, on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supplemental restraint system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, occupant classification system, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the supplemental restraint system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
CAUTION:
All fasteners must be torqued to specification to ensure proper operation of the steering column.
- Position the front wheels straight-ahead .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative (ground) cable from the battery.WARNING: Wait two minutes for the airbag system reserve capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service.
- Remove the driver airbag (Refer to ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS/DRIVER AIRBAG - REMOVAL) .
- Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt (4), then slide the steering wheel (3) off the shaft (5).
Remove the steering column shrouds (1 & 2). (Refer to STEERING/COLUMN/SHROUD - REMOVAL) .
- Disconnect the two electrical connectors (3 & 4) to the SCM (2).
- Remove the two screws (1) retaining the SCM (3) to the column shaft (2).
- Pull the SCM (3) off the steering column shaft (2).
