Rear Axle - 8 1/4: Gear-Pinion/Ring: Removal

NOTE:
The ring and pinion gears are serviced in a matched set. Never replace one gear without replacing the other matched gear.
- Remove differential from axle housing.
- Place differential case (1) in a vise with soft metal jaw.
- Remove bolts holding ring gear (2) to differential case.
- Drive ring gear from differential case with a dead-blow hammer (3). See Fig 1.
1 - COMPANION FLANGE 2 - PULLER - Hold flange yoke (1) with Holder 6719A and remove flange nut and washer.
- Remove flange yoke from pinion shaft with Remover C-452 (2). See Fig 2.
1 - HAMMER - Remove pinion from the housing with dead-blow hammer (1). See Fig 3.
- Remove pinion shaft seal with a seal pick.
- Remove oil slinger, if equipped, and front pinion bearing.
1 - REMOVER 2 - HANDLE - Remove front pinion bearing cup with Remover C-4345 (1) and Handle C-4171 (2). See Fig 4.
1 - DRIVER 2 - HANDLE - Remove rear bearing cup with Remover C-4307 (1) and Handle C-4171 (2). See Fig 5.
1 - COLLAPSIBLE SPACER 2 - SHOULDER 3 - PINION 4 - PINION DEPTH SHIM 5 - REAR BEARING - Remove collapsible spacer (1) from pinion (3). See Fig 6.
1 - PULLER 2 - VISE 3 - ADAPTERS 4 - PINION GEAR SHAFT - Remove rear pinion bearing with Puller/Press C-293-PA (1) and Adapters C-293-47 (3). See Fig 7.
- Remove depth shims from the pinion shaft and record the shims thickness.
