Front Axle - 186FIA: Gear-Pinion/Ring: Removal

NOTE:
The ring gear and pinion are serviced as a matched set. Never replace ring gear without replacing the matched pinion gear.
- Remove differential from axle housing.
- Place differential case (1) in a vise with soft jaws. See Fig 1.
- Remove bolts holding ring gear to differential case.
- Driver ring gear (2) off the differential case (1) with a dead-blow hammer (3).
1 - SPANNER WRENCH 2 - PINION COMPANION FLANGE - With Spanner Wrench 6958 (1) and a short length of 1 in. pipe, hold pinion companion flange (2) and remove pinion nut. See Fig 2.
1 - SPANNER WRENCH 2 - REMOVER - Remove pinion companion flange from pinion shaft with Spanner Wrench 6958 (1) and Remover C-452 (2). See Fig 3.
1 - RAWHIDE HAMMER - Remove pinion gear from housing with dead-blow hammer (1). See Fig 4.
1 - REMOVER 2 - HANDLE - Remove front pinion bearing cup, bearing, oil slinger and pinion seal with Remover C-149 (1) and Handle C-4171 (2). See Fig 5.
1 - REMOVER 2 - HANDLE - Remove rear pinion bearing cup with Remover C-4307 (1) and Handle C-4171 (2). See Fig 6.
1 - COLLAPSIBLE SPACER 2 - SHOULDER 3 - PINION GEAR 4 - OIL SLINGER 5 - REAR BEARING - Remove collapsible spacer (1) from pinion gear (3). See Fig 7.
1 - PULLER 2 - VISE 3 - ADAPTERS 4 - PINION GEAR SHAFT - Remove rear pinion bearing from the pinion (4) with Puller/Press C-293-PA (1) and Adapters C-293-42 (3). Remove oil slinger/pinion depth shim from the pinion shaft and record thickness. See Fig 8.
