DTC P0351: Ignition Coil #1 Primary Circuit (4.0L), DTC P0352: Ignition Coil #2 Primary Circuit (4.0L) Or DTC P0353: Ignition Coil #3 Primary Circuit (4.0L): Testing
- Turn ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII®, read DTCs. Is the Good Trip counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to INTERMITTENT CONDITION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the coil harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII®, actuate the ASD relay. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the ASD Relay Output circuit at the coil harness connector. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, stop all actuations and go to next step. If no, stop all actuations. Repair the ASD relay output circuit for an open (excessive resistance) or a short to ground. Inspect the related fuses and repair as necessary.
- Measure the primary resistance of the coil. Is the resistance value within 0.53 to 0.63 ohm for the 2.4L or 0.51 to 0.61 ohm for the 4.0L? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the ignition coil.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to 12-volts, probe the Ignition Coil Driver circuit at the coil harness connector. Crank the engine for 5 second while observing the test light. Does the test light brightly blink/flicker? If yes, replace the Ignition Coil. If ON constantly, go to next step. If OFF constantly, go to step 6.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the ignition coil driver circuit at the ignition coil harness connector. Is the resistance below 100 ohms? If yes, repair the ignition coil driver circuit for a short to ground. If no, go to next step.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance of the ignition coil driver circuit from the ignition coil harness connector to the PCM harness connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the ignition coil driver circuit for an open.
- Using the wiring diagram as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace PCM. Program the new PCM. See PROGRAMMING .
NOTE:
Before continuing, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.
