DTC P0351: Ignition Coil #1 Primary Circuit (4.0L), DTC P0352: Ignition Coil #2 Primary Circuit (4.0L) Or DTC P0353: Ignition Coil #3 Primary Circuit (4.0L): Testing

  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. With the DRBIII®, read DTCs. Is the Good Trip counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  2. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Coil Rail harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII®, actuate the ASD Relay. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground (B-), check the ASD Relay Output circuit at the Coil Rail harness connector. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, stop all actuations and go to next step. If no, stop all actuations. Repair the ASD Relay Output circuit for an open.
  3. NOTE: The following resistance measurement should be taken at 70-80°F (21-26°C).
  4. Turn the ignition off. Measure the primary resistance of the Coil Rail (component side). Is the resistance between 0.53 and 0.65 ohm? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the Coil Rail.
  5. Using a 12-volt test light connected to a 12-volt source, probe the Ignition Coil Driver circuit. Crank the engine for 5 seconds while observing the test light. Does the test light blink/flicker? If yes, replace the Ignition Coil Rail. If no, go to next step.
  6. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Measure the resistance of the Ignition Coil Driver circuit from the Coil Rail harness connector to the PCM connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open Ignition Coil Driver circuit.
  7. Measure the resistance between the Ignition Coil Driver circuit at the Coil Rail harness connector and ground. Is the resistance below 100 ohms? If yes, repair the short to ground in the Ignition Coil Driver circuit. If no, go to next step.
  8. There are no possible causes remaining, replace PCM. Program the new PCM. See PROGRAMMING .
  9. WARNING: When the engine is operating, do not stand in a direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing.
  10. The conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The following may help in identifying the intermittent condition. With the engine running at normal operating temperature, monitor the DRBIII® parameters related to the DTC while wiggling the wiring harness. Look for parameter values to change and/or a DTC to set. Review the DRBIII® Freeze Frame information. If possible, try to duplicate the conditions under which the DTC was set. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that may apply. Visually inspect the related wiring harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires. Visually inspect the related wiring harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals. Were any of the above conditions present? If yes, repair as necessary. If no, test is complete.
