Cluster Illumination Diagnosis

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation involving steering column, seat and instrument panel components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Do not apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect fuse No. 6 (5-amp) from junction block. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, inspect Orange wire between instrument cluster and junction block for short to ground. Repair as necessary. Replace fuse.
Turn parking lights on. Rotate headlight switch rheostat to brighten cluster illumination. Check voltage at fuse No. 6 (5-amp) in junction block. Rotate headlight switch rheostat to dim cluster illumination, and observe voltmeter. Voltage should be battery voltage with cluster illumination brightened and zero volts with cluster illumination dimmed. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair open in Tan wire between junction block and headlight switch.
Turn parking lights off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fuse No. 6 (5-amp) from junction block. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 3 (Orange wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C1. If no continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Orange wire between instrument cluster and junction block.
Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Install fuse No. 6 to junction block. Connect negative battery cable. Turn parking lights on. Rotate headlight switch rheostat to brighten cluster illumination. Check voltage at terminal No. 3 (Orange wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C1. If voltage exists, replace faulty bulb or bulb socket. If voltage does not exist, repair open in Orange wire between instrument cluster and junction block.
