Test 24A: Red Brake Warning Light Circuit

  1. If Red BRAKE warning light is always on, go to next step. If Red BRAKE warning light is not always on, go to step  8 .
  2. Ensure parking brake is released and brake master cylinder fluid is at proper level. Inspect brake warning light switch in proportioning valve. Ensure wire harness is connected and is not grounded to chassis. Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect parking brake switch. If Red BRAKE warning light is still on, go to next step. If light goes off, replace parking brake switch.
  4. Disconnect Red BRAKE warning light switch. Connect jumper wire between switch terminals. If Red BRAKE warning light is still on, go to next step. If light goes off, replace Red BRAKE warning light switch.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition switch 10-pin connector. Check for corroded, damaged or backed-out terminal pins. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition on. Connect a fused jumper wire between ignition switch connector terminals No. 3 and 9. If Red BRAKE warning light comes on, repair Red BRAKE warning light driver circuit for short to ground. If light does not come on, go to next step.
  7. If no other possible causes remain, replace ignition switch.
  8. If Amber ABS warning light operates, go to next step. If Amber ABS warning light does not operate, repair open in fused ignition switch output circuit to warning lights.
  9. Check brake warning light bulb. If bulb is okay, go to next step. If bulb is faulty, replace bulb.
  10. Turn ignition off. Using a fused jumper wire, backprobe left-side instrument cluster connector between terminal No. 2 and ground. Turn ignition on. If Red BRAKE warning light comes on, go to next step. If light does not come on, replace instrument cluster.
  11. Remove jumper wire. Turn ignition switch to START position. If Red BRAKE warning light comes on, go to step  15 . If light does not come on, go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition switch 10-pin connector. Check for corroded, damaged or backed-out terminal pins. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  13. Using a jumper wire and an external voltmeter, backprobe between ground and ignition switch connector terminal No. 2. Reconnect ignition switch connector. Turn ignition on. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair open in Red BRAKE warning light driver circuit.
  14. If no other possible causes remain, replace ignition switch.
  15. Disconnect Red BRAKE warning switch connector. Check for corroded, damaged or backed-out terminal pins. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  16. Disconnect Red BRAKE warning light switch connector. Using an external voltmeter, check voltage on Red BRAKE warning light connector terminal No. 2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair open in Red BRAKE warning light driver circuit.
  17. Connect a jumper wire across brake warning switch harness. Ensure parking brake is completely released. Using an external voltmeter, backprobe Red Brake warning light circuit at parking brake. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Red BRAKE warning light driver circuit.
  18. Apply parking brake. Backprobe between ground and parking brake switch connector terminal. If any voltage is present, replace parking brake switch. Test is complete.
