Rear Brake Caliper & Brake Pads: Removal

  1. Raise and support rear of vehicle. Remove rear wheels. For all models except 1999 Grand Cherokee, place "C" clamp on caliper. Solid end of clamp should contact back of caliper. Screw end should contact metal part of outboard pad. Tighten "C" clamp until piston is forced to bottom of bore. For 1999 Grand Cherokee, bottom caliper pistons by prying caliper over with screwdriver. Remove caliper support spring by prying spring out of caliper.
  2. Remove caliper mounting bolts. Rotate caliper rearward and remove from rotor. Press one corner of outboard pad inward. Pry pad upward and rotate out of caliper. Press inboard pad outward until retainers are free of caliper piston. Remove pad from caliper.
  3. Support caliper with wire from available suspension component. Clean caliper with shop towels. DO NOT use compressed air to clean caliper. Caliper dust seals may be unseated and dirt forced into caliper piston bore. If fluid is leaking past piston seal and dust boot, caliper must be overhauled. See Figure .
