Removal & Installation: Aw4: Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid and remove upper half of transmission fill tube. Disconnect cooler lines at transmission.
- Support transmission with jack. On 4WD models, disconnect transfer case shift linkage. Mark front drive shaft for reassembly reference. On all models, disconnect transmission shift cable, throttle valve cable and vehicle speed sensor wire harness. Remove necessary exhaust components.
- Mark rear drive shaft for reassembly reference. Disconnect and remove drive shaft(s). Remove rear crossmember. Disconnect transmission shift cable at transmission. Disconnect transmission throttle cable at engine.
- Disconnect necessary vacuum and fluid hoses. On 4WD models, remove transfer case. See the TRANSFER CASE article in TRANSFER CASES section. On all models, disconnect and remove Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. CKP sensor is located on top left side of torque converter housing.
- Remove starter. Remove torque converter access cover. Remove torque converter-to-flexplate bolts. Remove transmission-to-engine mounting bolts. Secure transmission to transmission jack with safety chains. Slide transmission rearward from dowels on cylinder block.
- Install "C" clamp on edge of torque converter housing to hold torque converter in place. Lower transmission and remove from vehicle.
