Removal (Deployed Module)

- Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
- Passenger-side air bag module is located above glove box and is mounted to instrument panel retainer, knee bolster and glove box. Roll/fold air bag toward instrument panel. Close door over folded air bag and tape door shut.
- Open both doors. Open glove box, and push sides inward to allow door to fully open. Working through glove box opening, remove 4 module retaining screws.
- Remove both door sills. Remove both instrument panel end covers to access knee bolster screws. See Figure . Remove right air duct. Remove knee bolster. Remove center air distribution duct. To remove instrument panel top cover, carefully pry up each end of top cover to disengage 4 retaining clips.
- Lift rear edge of top cover using a trim stick along rear edge. While lifting rear edge, slide top cover rearward to disengage front clips. Remove top cover. Place gear selector in Neutral position. Loosen set screw holding gear shift knob to gear shift. It is not necessary to fully remove set screw.
- Pull gear shift knob from gear shift. Remove rubber molding from gap at top of console bezel, if equipped. See Figure . Remove ashtray. Remove screw in ashtray slot, holding bezel to center console. Disengage clips holding rear of bezel to center console. Remove console bezel.
- Remove 2 upper and 2 lower bolts attaching steering column to mounting bracket. Lower steering column. Remove instrument panel mounting screws. Disconnect wiring harness connectors as necessary. Remove passenger-side air bag module and instrument panel as an assembly.
