Rear Brake Shoes: Installation

- Lubricate shoe contact area on backing plate with high temperature brake lubricant. Assemble parking brake lever to new brake shoe. Attach upper return spring between new primary and secondary shoes. Install adjuster screw assembly with the stepped forks facing outward (longer fork points rearward).
- Extend adjuster so shoes clear wheel cylinder boots. Install lower return spring. Position shoes assembly on backing plate and install hold-down pins, springs and retainers. Install self adjuster lever and spring. Compress parking brake cable housing spring to expose cable. Slide cable into parking brake lever. Position washer between parking brake cable housing spring and parking brake lever.
- Install drum, bearing, washer and nut. While rotating hub and drum assembly, tighten wheel bearing nut to 20-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 N.m). Loosen wheel bearing nut 1/4 turn to relieve all bearing preload. Finger tighten wheel bearing nut. End play should be .001-.003" (.025-.076 mm).
- Install cotter pin and grease cap. Bleed brakes if necessary. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Check for proper brake operation before moving vehicle.
