Section 196 (Steering Column Switches): Testing: Horn

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Inspect fuses (No. 13 in fuse block module and F14 in PDC). Replace fuses as required.
  2. Remove horn relay (in relay center). See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Perform the following steps in sequence.
    • Common feed (30) is connected to battery voltage and should be hot at all times. If battery voltage is not present at relay cavity 30, check circuit to fuse (No. 13). Repair as necessary. The normally closed relay terminal (87A) is connected to terminal 30 in the de-energized position, but is not used for this application.
    • The normally open relay terminal (87) is connected to common feed terminal (30) in the energized position. This terminal supplies battery voltage to the horn. If there is no continuity between relay cavity 87 and the horn terminal at all times, repair wiring or connections as required.
    • The coil battery terminal (86) is connected to the electromagnet in the relay and battery voltage should be present at all times. If battery voltage is not present at relay cavity 86, check circuit to fuse (No.13). Repair as required.
    • The coil ground terminal (85) is connected to the electromagnet in the relay. It is grounded when the horn switch is depressed. Check for continuity to ground at relay cavity 85 with the horn switch depressed. If no continuity is found with horn switch depressed or, if continuity is found with horn switch released, repair horn switch or wiring as required. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If all relay connections check okay, proceed to next test.
  3. With horn relay still removed, perform the following horn relay checks in sequence.
    • Relay in de-energized position should have continuity between relay terminals 87A and 30, and no continuity between terminals 87 and 30.
    • Resistance between relay terminals 85 and 86 (electromagnet) should be 70-80 ohms.
    • Connect a battery to relay terminals 85 and 86. There should be continuity between relay terminals 87 and 30. If relay fails any check, replace faulty relay. If relay checks okay, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect wiring at horn terminal. Depress horn switch. If there is no voltage at horn wiring connector, repair wiring to relay. If there is voltage at horn connector, go to next step.
  5. Measure resistance between horn bracket and chassis. If reading is zero ohms, replace faulty horn(s). If reading is not zero ohms, clean and tighten connection between horn mounting screw and bracket.
