Overdrive Unit: Disassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 1996 Dodge Ram Wagon, 1996 Dodge Ram Van, 1996 Dodge Pickup, 1996 Dodge Dakota, and 1996 Dodge Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove snap ring and overdrive clutch pack components from overdrive unit case. See Fig 1 . Note direction of clutch discs and clutch plates in overdrive clutch for reassembly reference. Components must be installed in correct sequence.
    CAUTION: Note direction of clutch discs and clutch plates in overdrive clutch pack for reassembly reference. Also note number of each components, as some models may contain different number of clutch components.
  2. Remove waved snap ring and reaction plate snap ring. Both snap rings are installed in same groove in overdrive unit case.
  3. Remove access cover from top of overdrive unit case for access to front bearing retaining ring. See Fig 2 . Using snap ring pliers, expand front bearing retaining ring while pushing output shaft forward to release bearing from retaining ring.

  4. Remove overdrive unit gear train from overdrive unit case. See Fig 3 . Remove front bearing retaining ring and governor support snap ring from overdrive unit case. See Fig 4 .
  5. Remove governor support with governor supply tube assembly from overdrive unit case. See Fig 4 and Fig 5 . Remove shaft retainer plug and snap ring for reaction plug from overdrive unit case. Refer to Fig 4 . DO NOT  over compress snap ring or it may be damaged.
  6. Remove shaft, parking sprag, spring and reaction plug. See Fig 4 . Remove rear bearing snap ring from overdrive unit case. If necessary, rotate snap ring until end of snap ring is adjacent to notch in case.
  7. Remove rear bearing from overdrive unit case by tapping case on wooden block. Inspect bushings in overdrive unit case. Replace bushings if damaged.
