Air Bag Module & Steering Wheel: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  .
  2. Air bag module is mounted on face of steering wheel. See Figure . Ensure wheels are pointed straight ahead and steering wheel is locked. Remove air bag module-to-steering wheel nuts from back side of steering wheel.
    CAUTION: Failure to position wheels in straight-ahead position with steering wheel locked when removing steering wheel could damage clockspring and/or require clockspring to be readjusted.
  3. Lift air bag module and disconnect electrical connector. Remove cruise control switch and connectors (if equipped) or cover. Remove steering wheel. Remove steering wheel with Puller (C3428B). Self-centering clockspring will automatically lock in place when steering wheel is removed.
