Speedometer/Odometer Inoperative

  1. Perform Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) test. See appropriate test in the TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If VSS is good, go to next step. If VSS tests bad, replace VSS.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Unplug vehicle speed sensor, PCM, vehicle information center (if equipped) and transmission control module (if equipped) connectors. Remove dash pad and cluster assembly. Disconnect printed circuit connector. See Figure and Figure .
  3. Probe cavity C7 of printed circuit connector. Check for continuity to ground. If there is no continuity, go to next step. If there is continuity, repair short circuit as required.
  4. Still probing cavity C7 of printed circuit connector, check for continuity to cavity No. 1 of VSS connector. If there is continuity, replace speedometer/odometer. If there is no continuity, repair open circuit as required. See Figure .
