Brake Indicator Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Wrangler. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Unplug parking brake switch connector. Turn ignition switch to START position. Light should illuminate. Release ignition switch to ON position. Light should go off. If light tests okay, go to step 10). If light test is not okay, go to next step.
  2. Unplug brake warning switch connector. Install a jumper wire between 2 cavities of connector. Turn ignition switch to START position. Light should illuminate. Remove jumper wire and light should go out. If test is correct, replace brake warning switch. If test was not correct, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Install a jumper wire between brake warning switch connector and ground. If light comes on, go to step 5). If light does not come on, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.Remove jumper wire and disconnect negative battery cable. Remove left instrument cluster bezel and main cluster. Install a jumper wire between cavity No. 1 of cluster connector and ground. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch to ON position. If light illuminates, repair open in circuit to brake warning switch. If light does not illuminate, replace bulb.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove jumper wire. Disconnect negative battery cable. Check for continuity between brake warning switch connector and ground with ignition switch in START position. If there is no continuity, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Unplug ignition switch connectors. Check for continuity between ignition switch cavity for brake warning switch (White/Black wire) and ground. If there is no continuity, go to next step. If there is continuity, repair short circuit between ignition switch and brake warning switch connectors as required.
  7. Check for continuity between ignition switch cavity for brake warning switch (White/Black wire) and brake warning switch connector. If there is continuity, go to next step. If there is no continuity, repair open circuit as required.
  8. Check for continuity between metal steering column jacket and ground. If there is continuity, go to next step. If there is no continuity, ensure a good connection at the ground clip installation.
  9. Turn ignition switch to START position and hold there. Check for continuity between ignition switch cavity for brake warning switch (White/Black wire) and ground. If there is no continuity, replace ignition switch.
  10. Unplug brake warning switch connector. Check for continuity between parking brake switch connector and ground. If there is no continuity, go to next step. If there is continuity, repair short circuit as required.
  11. Check for continuity between parking brake switch connector and brake warning switch connector (White/Black wire). If there is continuity, replace parking brake switch. If there is no continuity, repair open circuit to brake warning switch as required.
