Test NS-6B - Correcting No Response Condition

NOTE: Perform TEST NS-6A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  at beginning of article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-1A  after each repair.
  1. If ignition was not on when NO RESPONSE message was displayed, turn ignition on to get a response. Test is complete. If ignition was on when NO RESPONSE message was displayed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool from Data Link Connector (DLC). Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 60-pin connector and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between SCI transmit circuit at DLC and ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in SCI transmit circuit.
  3. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between SCI receive circuit at DLC and ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in SCI receive circuit.
  4. Connect a jumper wire between SCI transmit circuit at DLC and ground. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of SCI transmit circuit at PCM connector terminal No. 25. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in SCI transmit circuit.
  5. Connect a jumper wire between SCI receive circuit at DLC and ground. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of SCI receive circuit at PCM connector terminal No. 45. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in SCI receive circuit.
  6. Connect scan tool to a functional DLC on another vehicle. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to read trouble codes. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE, replace PCM on initial vehicle.
  7. Substitute another scan tool cartridge. Using scan tool, attempt to read trouble codes. If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE, replace scan tool adapter cable. Using scan tool, attempt to read trouble codes. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, substitute another scan tool.
