Test Dr-7A - Testing No. 1 Cylinder Top Dead Center Sensor (Code 23)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Plymouth Laser and 1994 Eagle Talon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  1. Using DRB, erase faults. Start engine and idle for more than one minute. Read faults. If Code 23 is displayed again, go to step 3). If Code 23 is not displayed again, wiggle crank angle/Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor wiring harness while monitoring DRB display. Crank angle/TDC sensor is located on end of cylinder head.
  2. If Code 23 is displayed when wiggling crank angle/TDC sensor wiring, repair wiring harness where wiggling caused Code 23 to set. Perform TEST VER-2 . If Code 23 is not displayed, perform TEST DR-15A .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at crank angle/TDC sensor 4-pin connector terminal No. 1 (White wire). If voltage is less than 4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 4 volts, replace crank angle/TDC sensor. Perform TEST VER-2.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU 24-pin connector. Measure resistance between crank angle/TDC sensor connector terminal No. 1 (White wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in White wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  5. Measure resistance on White wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 22 and crank angle/TDC sensor connector terminal No. 1. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open circuit in White wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU. Perform TEST VER-2.
