Test Dr-16A - Testing Sensors

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Plymouth Laser and 1994 Eagle Talon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  1. Start engine. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Read oxygen (O2) sensor value. If O2 sensor is not switching from rich to lean, go to step 3). If O2 sensor is switching from rich to lean, read airflow sensor value. If airflow sensor value is 35-100 Hz (a Hertz is equal to one cycle per second), go to step 4). If airflow sensor value is not 35-100 Hz, turn engine off.
  2. Inspect air induction system for restrictions or leaks. If no restrictions or leaks exist, replace airflow sensor. Perform TEST VER-2 . If restrictions or leaks exist, repair as required. Perform TEST VER-2.
  3. If O2 sensor voltage is locked on zero or .03 volt, perform TEST DR-2A. If O2 sensor voltage is not locked on zero or .03 volt, check for engine running rich or lean. If engine is running rich or lean, repair as required. Perform TEST VER-2. If engine is not running rich or lean, replace O2 sensor. Perform TEST VER-2.
  4. With engine running at normal operating temperature, read air temperature sensor value. If air temperature sensor value is not within 10°F (-12°C) of underhood temperature, replace air temperature sensor. Perform TEST VER-2. If air temperature sensor value is within 10°F (-12°C) of underhood temperature, turn engine off. Turn ignition on.
  5. Ensure throttle cable is adjusted and throttle is at idle position. Read Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) voltage. If TPS voltage is .48-.51 volt, go to next step. If TPS voltage is not .48-.51 volt, attempt to adjust TPS. If TPS cannot be adjusted, replace TPS. Perform TEST VER-2. If TPS can be adjusted, go to next step.
  6. While watching DRB display, slowly open throttle to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position. If transition is not smooth, replace TPS. Perform TEST VER-2. If transition is smooth, start engine. Set engine speed to 2000 RPM. Read voltage sense value. If voltage sense value is not 13.1-14.5 volts, repair charging system as required. Perform TEST VER-2 . If voltage sense is 13.1-14.5 volts, go to next step.
  7. Allow engine to idle. Read coolant sensor value. If coolant sensor value is 180-215°F (82-102°C), go to next step. If coolant sensor value is not 180-215°F (82-102°C), measure coolant temperature at radiator. If radiator temperature is within 10°F of DRB display, repair cooling system as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If radiator temperature is not within 10°F (-12°C) of DRB display, replace coolant temperature sensor. Perform TEST VER-2.
  8. While monitoring display, wiggle coolant temperature sensor wire harness. If coolant temperature sensor value does not change, go to next step. If coolant temperature sensor value changes, repair wire causing coolant temperature sensor value to change. Perform TEST VER-2.
  9. Read barometric pressure sensor value. If DRB barometric pressure sensor value is within one in. Hg of actual value (measured with barometer), perform TEST DR-17A. If DRB barometric pressure sensor value is not within one in. Hg of actual value (measured with barometer), turn ignition off.
  10. Inspect ECU and airflow sensor connector for damage. Repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2 . If damage is not present, replace airflow sensor. Perform TEST VER-2.
