Test NS-1A - Reading Fault Codes & Checking For Spark

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Plymouth Laser and 1994 Eagle Talon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged before proceeding.
  1. Attempt to crank engine for 10 seconds. If engine does not crank, repair cranking system. If engine cranks, connect DRB to engine diagnostic connector and read faults. If DRB message screen is blank or NO RESPONSE message is displayed, perform TEST NS-6A .
  2. If DRB does not display Code 22, 41 or 42, go to step 5). If DRB displays Code 22, go to TEST NS-4A . If DRB displays Code 42, go to TEST NS-5A . If DRB displays Code 41, disconnect fuel injection control relay harness connector. Fuel injection control relay is located on right side of center console. See Fig 1.

  3. Using voltmeter, check voltage at fuel injection control relay harness connector terminal No. 3 (Red wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Red wire. Perform TEST VER-1 . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  4. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between fuel injection control relay terminals No. 2 and 3. See Fig 1. Replace fuel injection control relay if resistance is more than 10 ohms. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Yellow/White wire between fuel injection control relay and splice. Perform TEST VER-1.
  5. Disconnect No. 1 spark plug wire at spark plug. Insert an insulated screwdriver in spark plug wire end.
  6. Hold screwdriver 1/4" from ground. Crank engine and check for spark. If a good spark occurs, perform TEST NS-2A. If a good spark does not occur, check No. 1 spark plug wire resistance.
  7. If resistance is more than 15,000 ohms, replace No. 1 spark plug wire and recheck for spark. If resistance is less than 15,000 ohms, disconnect ignition coil connector.
  8. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a voltmeter, check voltage at ignition coil connector terminal No. 1 (Red wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Red wire between ignition coil connector and ignition splice. Perform TEST VER-1 .
  9. If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between ignition coil connector terminals. If resistance is not .9-1.2 ohms, replace ignition coil. Perform TEST VER-1.
  10. If resistance is .9-1.2 ohms, measure resistance between ignition coil terminal No. 1 (Red wire) and secondary terminal (distributor side). See Fig 2. If resistance is not 19,000-27,000 ohms, replace ignition coil. If resistance is 19,000-27,000 ohms, go to next step.
  11. Disconnect distributor 6-pin connector. See Fig 2. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between distributor 6-pin connector terminal No. 5 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair Black wire for an open circuit to ground. Perform TEST VER-1.

  12. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, reconnect distributor 6-pin connector. Using an analog voltmeter, backprobe Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 (Dark Green/Yellow wire). While watching voltmeter, crank engine. If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to step 15).
  13. If voltage is less than 4 volts, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector and distributor 6-pin connector. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between distributor 6-pin connector terminal No. 6 (Dark Green/Yellow wire) and ground.
  14. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace ECU. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Dark Green/Yellow wire for a short to ground. Perform TEST VER-1.
  15. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECU 18-pin connector and distributor 6-pin connector. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of Dark Green wire between ECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 54 and distributor 6-pin connector terminal No. 6.
  16. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace power transistor. Perform TEST VER-1 . If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open Dark Green/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-1.
