Test Dr-8A - Testing No. 1 Cylinder Top Dead Center Sensor (Code 23)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Plymouth Laser and 1994 Eagle Talon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  1. Using DRB, erase faults. Start engine, and let it idle for more than one minute. Read faults. If Code 23 is displayed again, go to step 3). If Code 23 is not displayed again, wiggle Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor wiring harness while monitoring DRB display.
  2. If Code 23 is displayed when TDC sensor wiring is wiggled, repair wiring harness causing Code 23 to set. Perform TEST VER-2. If Code 23 is not displayed, perform TEST DR-14A .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect distributor 6-pin connector. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and distributor 6-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Dark Blue wire). If voltage is less than 4 volts, go to step 5). If voltage is more than 4 volts, measure voltage between distributor 6-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire) and ground.
  4. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace TDC sensor. Perform TEST VER-2 . If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Black/White wire between ignition switch and distributor 6-pin connector. Perform TEST VER-2.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Electronic Control Unit (ECU) 24-pin connector. Measure resistance between distributor 6-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Dark Blue wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair Black/Dark Blue wire for a short to ground. Perform TEST VER-2.
  6. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, measure resistance of Black/Dark Blue wire between ECU 24-pin connector terminal No. 22 and distributor 6-pin connector terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ECU. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open Black/Dark Blue wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
