Installation (Cherokee 8 1/4" Ring Gear)

  1. Install pinion gear, pinion bearings, and seal (if removed). Adjust pinion preload. See REASSEMBLY  under OVERHAUL. Place differential carrier with adjusters in axle housing.
  2. Install bearing caps. Check and adjust ring gear backlash and tooth contact. Preload differential carrier bearings. Tighten bolts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 N.m). Tighten adjuster lock screws to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
  3. Apply RTV sealant to axle housing cover. Tighten cover bolts. Connect drive shaft. Using 75W-90 gear oil, fill axle with 4.4 pts. (2.0L) of fluid.
    NOTE: For differentials with Trac-Lok, add container of friction modifier (Trac-Lok additive).
