Fitting Pistons

  1. Determine piston clearance. For piston clearance specification, see ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article. Pistons up to .004" (.10 mm) undersize may be enlarged by knurling or slot-peening. If clearance is not within specification, install new pistons.
  2. Measure inside diameter of cylinder bore at 2.31" (58.73 mm) below top of bore. Measure outside diameter of piston. Measure piston at right angle of piston pin, at the center line of the pin. Compare reading to diameter of cylinder bore to determine piston clearance.
